Virginia G. Gilson, 89, of Monmouth passed away at 2:42 A.M., January 5, 2014 at the Monmouth Nursing Home in Monmouth.
Virginia was born September 20, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Anton Cornelius and Johanna Barbara (Henke) Vanderweel. She graduated from Sullivan High School in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. She married Frank S. Gilson November 6, 1953. He preceded her in death July 21, 1984
Mrs. Gilson worked as a pre-school teacher, an assistant for a pediatrician, and did surveys for the Nielson Ratings Company while in Chicago. In Monmouth she worked as an activities director for a nursing home and was a cook for the Monmouth Public School District at Central Junior High School.
Virginia enjoyed traveling and went to Europe several times to see her children that lived there. She liked taking walks and Sunday drives. She was a very good seamstress and loved to sew. She enjoyed doing alterations for others and she spent many hours making beautiful quilts. Virginia also enjoyed reminiscing while looking at photographs of family and of the past events of her life.
Surviving are her children, Gerri (Richard) Barta, of Bismark, ND; William (Ingrid) Gilson, of Otterburg, Germany; Regina Gilson, of Sugar Grove, Illinois; and Nancy (Doug) Inness, of Galesburg; grandchildren including Brenda (Tim) Schreck ,of Monmouth; Jeff (Sarah) Walters, of Monmouth; Matthew and Nicholas Inness of Galesburg; and great-grandchildren Logan and Lexus Walters of Monmouth. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Joanna Gieffers, and one brother, Peter Vanderweel.
According to her wishes, cremation will be accorded. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., at McGuire and Davies Funeral Home and Crematory in Monmouth. Her family will be present an hour prior to the service to greet friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Monmouth Nursing Home or the Warren County Public Library.
