Shirley L. Koons

Shirley L. Koons, St. Petersburg, FL, died April 8, 2013 at West GA Hospice in LaGrange, GA.

She was born April 30, 1930, in North Henderson, IL, the daughter of Durward Koons and Dorothy Koons Melton. She graduated from Alexis High School and Northwestern University School of Dental Hygiene. She practiced in Davenport, IA, Galesburg, IL, and Bloomington, IL. In 1981, she moved to St. Petersburg, FL and worked in a dental office there.

She is survived by her sister, Doris Ann Purlee, LaGrange, GA, two nephews, Dr. Dave (Jodie) Purlee, Mt. Carroll, IL, and Steve (Leslie) Purlee, Dacula, GA, one niece, Julie (Mike) Heath, LaGrange, GA, three great nephews, Rob (Jenna) Purlee, Westerville, OH, Adam Henderson, LaGrange, GA, and Matthew Purlee, Dacula, GA, three great nieces, Janel (Ryan) Bast , Davenport, IL, Kelly Purlee, Chicago, IL, and Abby Purlee, Dacula, GA, Great-great nephew and niece, Carson and Kate Purlee. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Shirley enjoyed traveling, painting, and photography. She won several awards for photographs she had taken during her travels here and abroad. She was awarded honorary membership in Sigma Phi Alpha dental sorority for her presentations in New Zealand and the Netherlands and published articles on dental health in the American Dental Hygiene Magazine.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, North Henderson, IL. Her photograph and painting of the stained glass windows of the church were used as the cover of the bulletins for the church's one hundred and one hundred and fifty year anniversary worship services.

Graveside memorial services and burial will be held June 8, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Alexis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church, North Henderson, IL.
