Alexis

Sam W. Medhurst, 67, of Alexis, IL, passed away at 4:45 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2024 at The Lamoine, Macomb, IL.

He was born on September 15, 1957, in Galesburg, the son of Walter (Red) and Geneva Medhurst. Sam was raised in Alexis, IL, and graduated from Alexis High School in 1975.

Sam married Rhonda Day on December 1, 1984 and they later divorced.

Sam worked as a farmer and at Main Street Feed in Alexis after graduation. He then worked for the BNSF Railroad and retired after 25 years there.

Sam enjoyed playing football, basketball and track in high school. Growing up on a farm, he showed Yorkshire hogs, Shorthorn and Hereford cattle, and Shetland ponies in 4-H. He later went trail riding on his quarter horse and showed Belgian horses with his family. After retirement, he showed F&M Clydesdales and used them for ministry purposes until his health failed. When asked what he planned to do after retiring, he simply said, “Help people.” Sam was a believer and a member of Alexis United Presbyterian Church. He loved God and had a heart for the lost and lonely. He never hesitated to give generously to those in need.

Surviving are his children, Jake (Lindsey) Medhurst of Alabama, Gary (Keri) Medhurst of Good Hope, and Meghan Medhurst of Galesburg; his grandchildren, Lucy and Macy Medhurst; his step grandchildren, Gracey and Zavier Chatterton. Also surviving are his sister, Susie (Joe) Pokorny of Petersburg, his nieces, Maggie (Kris) Cunningham and Heidi (Russell) Moore, and his nephew Patrick (Melissa) Pokorny and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Donna and Kathryn Medhurst.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, North Henderson, IL. No visitation hours are planned. Memorials can be made to the Sam Medhurst Memorial Fund and can be sent to the funeral home. McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL, is in charge of the arrangements.
