Mary Twomey, "Nanny", "Mary T.", age 82, of Monmouth, passed away at 5:57 p.m., Monday, April 8, 2013 at her home in Monmouth, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born Nov. 16, 1930 in Monmouth, IL the daughter of James and Nora (Feehan) Craig. She was raised and educated in Monmouth, attending ICS and graduating from Monmouth High School in 1948.
Mary married John E. Twomey in Monmouth on Sept. 3, 1951.
Mary was a homemaker and a loving wife and mother. Following high school, Mary worked at the Warren Co. Courthouse before becoming the first dental assistant for Dr. Carl Johnson. She later assisted in the accounting dept. of the Twomey Co. for several years.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Altar & Rosary Society and the Monmouth County Club. She served on the board of the Monmouth Country Club, the Monmouth Hospital as well as on th board for Twomey Company. Mary had volunteered at Warren Achievement, Special Olympics and ICS. She was a Monmouth Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow. Mary was an avid golfer. She was the City Golf Champion/Senior Division, MCC golfer of the Year and even shot a hole in one.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, John; 5 children, Lucy (George) Dougherty of Pagosa Springs, CO; Susan Twomey of Monmouth; Marisa Silvesteri of Sarasota, FL; Craig (Wendy) Twomey of Monmouth and Sara Cunningham of Monmouth; 11 grandchildren, Molly (Josh) Dougherty Batschelet of Austin, TX, John Dougherty of Brooklyn, NY, Scott Dougherty of Austin, TX, Ryan Cunningham and Blake Cunningham both of Monmouth, Claire Chalifoux of Chicago, IL, John Silvestri of Sarasota, FL, Craig Levere of Prescott, AZ, Austin, (Stacy) Twomey, Elizabeth Twomey and Nolan Twomey all of Monmouth; sister, Anna Keithley of Monmouth; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Catherine Bennett; brothers, Jackie Craig and Eddie Craig.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 15, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Monmouth with Msgr. Tom Mack, Fr. Tim Hepner & Deacon Will Clark. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Monmouth. Visitation will held at Immaculate Conception Church on Sunday, April 14, 2013 beginning with a Rosary Service at 3:30 P.M. followed by the visitation until 7:30 P.M. Memorials may be given to ICS or the OSF Holy Family Medical Center Auxiliary. McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory in Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements, 309-734-6008.
Mary believed that, "There are no such things as strangers, only friends that we have not yet met" . It would be her wish that after you read this today you go out into your community and hug your friends and neighbors.
