Marilyn D. VanHoozer, 94, of Monmouth, IL passed away at 9:34 am, Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, IL.
Marilyn was born May 10, 1927 in Blythedale, MO, the daughter of Curtis M. and Florence (Lindrose) VanHoozer. She was raised and educated in Blythedale graduating from Blythedale High School in 1945. She received a B.S. degree in Education from Northwest Missouri University in Maryville, MO and later a Master’s degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
She began teaching in Blythedale where she spent four years before moving to Keokuk, IA. She taught at Garfield, Lincoln and George Washington schools in Keokuk and was later Elementary Principal at Lincoln and Washington-Central Schools. She retired from teaching in 1989.
In 2003 Marilyn moved to Monmouth, IL. Originally a member and ordained elder in the United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk, she moved her membership to Faith United Presbyterian in Monmouth. She was a 50-year member of PEO Chapter IG in Keokuk and later transferred her membership to Chapter LE in Monmouth.
Marilyn enjoyed reading, walking, traveling and spending time with friends.
Surviving Marilyn is her adopted family; Esther White of Monmouth; nephews, Ken (Gail) Azinger of Elgin, IL, Al Azinger of Bloomington, IL; great-nieces and nephews, Luke (Ryoko) Azinger and Rachel (Terry) Ilahi of Washington State, Catherine (Terry) McAlister, Homewood, IL, Natalie (Dan) Eness of Ankeny, IA. Several great-great nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Milo VanHoozer and one niece Brenda Azinger.
A Celebration of Life will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Faith United Presbyterian Church, Monmouth, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth or The International Storytelling Center of Jonesboro, TN and sent to the funeral home. Interment will be in Cedar Hill/Neville Cemetery, Blythedale, MO. McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL, is in charge of the arrangements.
