Lois E. Syrkel, 90, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 4:17 a.m., Saturday, February 3, 2024 at her daughter’s home in Monmouth.
She was born on January 24, 1934 in Millersburg Township, Mercer County, IL, the daughter of George H. and Vera (Temple) Newton. Lois was raised and educated in Mercer County.
Lois married Donald L. Hume on July 11, 1953 in Monmouth, IL; he preceded her in death on September 10, 1987. She later married Edward K. Syrkel on February 14, 1988 in Oquawka, IL; he preceded her in death.
Lois worked as a seamstress at Form Fit, Smoller’s, and Carhartt for many years. She also cooked at McMahon’s Pub in Monmouth. She was the President of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Oquawka Eagles Arie. Lois enjoyed mushrooming, playing bingo and cards. Most of all, Lois enjoyed spending time with her family.
Surviving Lois are her daughters, Cindy Moore of Galesburg, IL and Linda (Mike) McMahon of Monmouth, IL; her grandchildren, Mike (Angela) Hume, John (Angela) Moore, Sean Moore, Chad Moore, Donald (Tiffany) Moore, Windie Moore, Jonathon (Janel) Waterman, Justin (Kelli) Waterman, Jacob Waterman, Jessa Waterman; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; her brother, John Newton of Oquawka, IL; her sister, Joyce King of Keithsburg, IL; her son-in-law, Jay Waterman of Oquawka, IL; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands; one brother, Harold Newton; one sister, Nettie Owens; and one daughter, Tina Waterman.
Lois’s Family would like to thank OSF Hospice for the outstanding care they provided and a special thanks to Dr. Michael Abouassaly.
A Gathering of Family & Friends will be from 10:00 am-12:00 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 2024 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Strom Center in Monmouth. McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL, is in charge of the arrangements.
