Larry L. Dye

Larry L. Dye, 81, of Monmouth, IL, died peacefully in his home on October 28, 2020.  The youngest of eight children, Larry was born on June 15, 1939 to Earl and Bertha Dye in Kirkwood, IL. In 1958 he married Doris Pate, the love of his life and faithful wife of 62 years.

Larry was well known around the Monmouth area as the owner and operator of Dye Roofing and Construction for over 45 years, building the roofing that still protects many area homes and businesses today. Along the way he built countless dugouts and concession stands for scores of little league and softball teams that boasted his "Dye Roofing" logo, ensuring the community's kids had a safe place to grow and play.

Because he believed that play wasn't just for the kids, Larry filled area establishments with music, dancing, and perhaps a little too much fun with his band, "LD and the Country Western Four." His accomplished musicianship led him to writing and playing music into his latest years, and while he complained that his hands just didn't strum the guitar like they used to, his family insists that he never missed a beat. His gift of music will lead family gatherings for generations to come.

Outside of work and play, you could find Larry in his true sanctuary - the outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he curated his home with trophies and curiosities he collected on his adventures, and often surprised his grandchildren with something other than turkey on the Thanksgiving table. If he was ever found inside, it was in his workshop, crafting the cradles that held his grandchildren, more birdhouses, or any piece of furniture his wife desired. His carpentry continues to live in his family's homes, as a testament to his artistry, and his deep love of family.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Doris Dye; his youngest daughter, Vicki Dye-Lantz; five grandchildren, Nic (Ashlee) Lantz, Matt (Ali) Lantz, Hallie (Nick Dorn) Hottle, Hannah (Keenan) Cave, and Dalton (McKaylee) Hottle; five great grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Guilinger of Savanah, IL; two brothers, Cleo (Karen) Dye of Little York, IL, and Ivan (Vanesse) Dye of Belvidere, IL. Larry is preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Tammi Hottle; his brother, Laverne Dye; and three sisters, May Shook, Dorthy Waddell, and Maxine Reynolds.

Concerned for his family until the very end, there will be no public visitation due to COVID-19 risks, per his request.  Cremation rites have been accorded. The family will hold private services at a later date. Memorial gifts are welcomed in his honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL.
