John C. Szaltis, 66, of Monmouth, passed away at 12:09 p.m., Friday, March 3, 2017 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, IL.
He was born on October 27, 1950 in Oak Park, IL, the son of Leonard and Dorothy (Seneke) Szaltis. John was raised and educated in in Des Plaines, IL. He graduated from Monmouth College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health. He later graduated from Western Illinois University with a Master’s Degree in Science. John served in the United States Army from 1970-1976.
John married Beatrice Zavorski on November 30, 1974 in Des Plaines, IL, she survives.
John worked as a Police Officer for the City of Monmouth from 1980-1986. He then went to work at Henry C. Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg, IL, from 1986-2008 as an educator. John was a member and leader of the AFSCME Union and a member of the Monmouth American Legion. John also served as a Boy Scout Leader and coach for many years.
Surviving John is his wife Beatrice Szaltis of Monmouth, two sons; Leonard Szaltis and Joseph (Jamie) Szaltis both of Monmouth, and one daughter Sarah (Lucas) Kulp of Monmouth. Also surviving are three grandchildren; Alexis Wooten, Jayden Szaltis, Katelyn Szaltis, and two sisters, Deborah (Pete) O’Bannon of San Antonio, TX and Sharon Szaltis of Roselle, IL.
John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Daniel Szaltis.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be at Immaculate Conception Church. Memorials can be made to the John Szaltis Memorial Fund. McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements.
