Jack L. Stevens

Jack L. Stevens, 91, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 8:45 a.m., Sunday, August 20, 2017 at the Richard Owens Hospice Home, Peoria. IL.

He was born on October 29, 1925 in Little York, IL, the son of Thomas and Roxie (Neal) Stevens. Jack was raised and educated in Little York and graduated from Little York High School in 1943.

Jack served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator in Japan.

He married Madge Burkett at the home of Rev. Bill Gustafson in Monmouth on October 15, 1945. She preceded him in death on October 19, 2013.

Jack first worked as a baker at Strands Bakery in Monmouth; he then worked as a custodian at the Warren County Courthouse. Jack later worked at Wilson Foods as a meat cutter until he retired in 1986. He also worked as a transporter for a time at Munson trucking in Monmouth. Jack served as a trustee for the Monmouth Township from 1981-1985, was a member of the Monmouth Lions Club, Warren County Prime Beef Festival Committee, Monmouth American Legion, and the Immanuel Baptist Church Building Committee. He was a volunteer fireman for 15 years. Jack was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Monmouth. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Surviving Jack are two daughters; Nancy (Greg) Fox of Caneyville, KY, Mary Osborn of Gerlaw, IL; one son, Ed (Lynette) Stevens of Sycamore, IL, seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and special friend, Dave Sharp of Monmouth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sons; Jack Leroy Stevens, Jr., Dennis Lee Stevens, one brother, and six sisters.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 24, 2017 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Interment with military honors will be in Warren County Memorial Park, Monmouth. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to the Richard Owens Hospice House in Peoria.
