Helen L. (Geltmacher) Young Glenn

October 29, 1927 — October 23, 2022

Monmouth

Helen L. Young Glenn, 94, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 9:41 a.m., Sunday, October 23, 2022 at her home.

She was born on October 29, 1927 in Good Hope, IL, the daughter of Orville and Mabel (Beal) Geltmacher.  She was one of four girls and three boys.  Helen was anxious to get into the world; she wouldn’t wait for the doctor, so her mother let the neighbor man deliver her.

Helen graduated high school and loved her job at Brown, Lynch, Scott so much she decided not to go on to college.  Helen worked in accounting for 15 years for a local bank and then went on to own her own business mailing advertisements for another 12 years.  She worked up until she was 78 years old, when she retired from the Postal service after 33 years.

Helen married George K. Young on October 26, 1947.  Times were tough and they lived in an aunt and uncle's storeroom for the first year of their marriage.  They figured if they could make it through the first year, they could make it through anything.  Helen was married for 28 years before the lord called him home.  Helen remarried George’s best friend, Paul Glenn 14 years later.

Helen and George were blessed to adopt two children, Rodeny and Debra.  Rodney and his wife Cher had two children, Michael Young and Brian (Britney) Young.  Helen also has several great grandchildren, McKenzie, Madilyn, Myles, Alayna, Amara.  Helen’s family means the world to her.

Helen started the “Golden Friendship Group” at her church and kept up the tradition for 30 years.  The group was geared toward senior citizens.  They held potlucks and took trips all throughout the year.

Helen and her lady friends always said a good time started with the 3 F’s: Food, Fun & Far Away Places.  Helen took many trips with friends and family throughout the years.  She made trips to Alaska, California, and Niagara Falls.  She even took her aunt to the Tulip Fest in Michigan.

It was always George’s dream to purchase homes and fix them up to sell them.  Helen kept that dream alive even after George died.  Helen had purchased seven different homes over the years.  She never fixed up a home she wouldn’t live in, so that’s exactly what she did.  Each time she purchased a home she would move in to it and fix it up before selling and starting all over again.  She said her friends would say you never know which side of town crazy Helen would live on next.

Helen is a kindhearted person and always enjoyed opening her home to just about anyone who needed a place to stay.  Helen has taken in single woman with children, friends, and many family members throughout the years.  George always told her if anyone needs a home you take them in.

Helen enjoyed reading any spare moments she had.  She read any book that was suggested to her but truly loves Christian books.  She stayed very active visiting and taking care of her friends and family.  Helen feels blessed for all of the things she has been given the opportunity to do on life.  She was truly able to make a difference in a lot of people's lives over the years.
