Harlan G. Johnson, 87, of Monmouth died at 2:30 A.M. Sunday, August 3, 2014 at his home. He was born August 3, 1927 in Monmouth, Il. the son of Harlan E. and Clytie (Logsdon) Johnson. He was raised and educated in Monmouth attending Monmouth Public Schools. Harlan served with the United States Navy on the Destroyer U.S.S. Mullany during World War II from 1944-1946, participating in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He later served with the United States Army during the Korean War from 1948-1952 where he earned 5 Battle Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and obtained the rank of Sergeant. Harlan married Delores Jackson in Monmouth, IL on October 7, 1953 and she survives. Harlan served as the General Chairman with the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks in Chicago for several years. He later moved back to Monmouth and worked at Wilson Foods where he became the President of Local #1218 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. He retired in 1990. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Monmouth. He was a lifetime member of the Monmouth VFW Post #2301 and the Monmouth American Legion Post #136. He was active in the local Democratic Party, enjoyed playing golf and gardening. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears, Cubs and Blackhawks. Harlan loved to listen to Jazz. Survivors include his wife; sons, Frank (Michele) Johnson of Bridgewater, NJ. and Robin Johnson of Monmouth; daughters, Dawn Johnson of Monmouth and Vicki Ring of Texas; 4 grandchildren; sister, Joan Needham of Monmouth; brothers, Danny (Vickie) Johnson of Monmouth, Tony (Barb) Johnson of Monmouth and Bradley (Diane) Johnson of Kirkwood; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and 1 brother. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church, Monmouth. Burial with Military Honors will be in Warren County Memorial Park. Friends may call Thursday, August 7, 2014 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth where his family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00.
