Geneva J. Medhurst

Geneva J. Medhurst, 87, of Alexis, IL died at 12:52 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2015 at the Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg. She was born on March 17, 1928 in Mercer County at the family home near Aledo, IL, the daughter of Lawrence and Carrie (Peters) Davis. She was raised and educated in Mercer County and graduated from Seaton High School in 1946. Geneva later attended Monmouth College and received her B.A. and M.A. from Western Illinois University. Geneva married Walter “Red” Medhurst in Seaton, IL on December 11, 1949 and he died October 3, 2003. Geneva was a teacher and homemaker. She was a 4th grade teacher of the Alexis C.U.S.D. 400 for 27 years retiring in 2002. She was a member of Countryside Bible Church, Retired Teachers Association, 4-H Leader, Choir Director and the Red Hatters. Geneva was an accomplished musician and organist; she played for over 50 years at local churches for many weddings and funerals. Surviving is her daughter Susie (Joey) Pokorny of Petersburg, IL, one son, Sam (Rhonda) Medhurst of Alexis, 6 grandchildren; Maggie (Kris) Cunningham of Springfield, IL, Heidi (Russell) Moore of Dallas, TX, Patrick Pokorny of Ipava, IL, Jake (Jenni) Medhurst of Abingdon, Gary (Keri) Medhurst and Meghan Medhurst both of Alexis; 6 great grandchildren, William, Brooks and Juliet Moore, Liam, Andrew and Collin Cunningham. Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters, Donna Medhurst and Kathryn Medhurst, one brother John Davis and one sister, Louise Bateman Graveside services will be 10:30 Friday, July 31, 2015 at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, North Henderson, IL. Friends may call Thursday at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, where her family will be present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Memorials can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or the Countryside Bible Church.
