Gary L Smith Jr

Gary L. Smith, Jr., 61, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 10:20 p.m., Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at his home.

He was born on November 22, 1955 in Ottumwa, IA, the son of Gary L. Sr. and Barbara Jean (Waller) Smith. Gary was raised and educated in Ottumwa and graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1973. He then attended Iowa Wesleyan University and earned his degree in engineering.

Gary married Debra DeCrane on May 11, 2010 in Las Vegas, NV, she survives.

He worked for Hon Industries in Mt. Pleasant, IA as an engineer for 18 years. Gary later worked as an engineer for Case New Holland in Moline for 8 years, and as a heavy assembler in the Burlington, IA plant. Gary was an avid New York Yankees and New England Patriots fan. Gary enjoyed music.

Surviving Gary is his wife, Debra DeCrane of Monmouth; granddaughter, Jada Wallace, who he raised, two sisters; Mari Sue Blacksmith of Ottumwa, IA, Lisa Ann (Chris) Coppus of Columbus, OH; step son, Casey (Shawna) DeCrane of Mt. Zion, IL; and step daughter; Jessica DeCrane of Moline, IL; brother in law, Dan (Susan) Olander of Lakeworth, FL; sister in laws, Diane Willer of Galva, IL and Paula Olander of Davenport, IA; mother in law, Helen Olander of Galva, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters; Terry Lynne Lee and Lesley Jeanne Zimmerman.

Memorial Services will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, September 9, 2017 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Visitation will be Saturday morning from 11:00-1:00 pm. Cremation rites have been accorded. Interment will be in McIntire Cemetery in Ottumwa, IA at a later date. In lieu of flowers can be made to the Knox County Humane Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.
