Gary L. Barnett, 82, of Monmouth, IL formerly of East Moline, IL passed away at 3:15 p.m., Friday, April 22, 2016 at Monmouth Nursing Home, Monmouth.

He was born on March 12, 1934 in Peoria, IL, the son of Herbert A. and Isabelle (Oaks) Barnett. Gary was raised and educated in Kirkwood; he graduated from Biggsville High School in 1952. He later graduated from Monmouth College in 1959 and the University of Utah with a Master's Degree in Social Work in 1961. Gary served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1956.

Gary married Joyce Underwood on September 5, 1959 in Monmouth, IL, she survives.

Gary was the Vice-President at the Bethany Home in Moline, IL for 28 years before retiring in 1996. He was the past president of the Rock Island County Health Department, a member of the East Moline School Board, Past President of the Skip-a-long Day Care Board of Directors and a 50 year member of the A. Lincoln Masonic Lodge, #518 A.F. & A.M...

He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in East Moline and was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monmouth. He enjoyed fishing and boating on the Mississippi River. He loved attending his grandchildren's many sporting and school events.

Gary is survived by his wife Joyce Barnett of Monmouth, one daughter Lynn (Steve) McVey of Monmouth, one son Doug (Cindy) Barnett of Port Byron, IL,; 4 grandchildren, Matt McVey of Peoria, IL, Hannah McVey of Monmouth, Erin Barnett and Jack Barnett both of Port Byron, IL; nieces and nephews.

Private family funeral services were held Sunday, April 24, 2016 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory in Monmouth, IL, with interment in Silent Home Cemetery, Cameron, IL.
