Frank “Phil” Kuhnkey, 88, of Monmouth, IL passed away at 6:20 am , Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Courtyard Estate in Monmouth. IL.
He was born September 2, 1930 in rural Monmouth, IL the son of Frank Phillip and Kathryn E. (Conard) Kuhnkey. He was raised and educated in Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School in 1948.
Phil served with the United States Air Force and the Illinois National Guard for 17 years.
Phil married Rosa M. Gaskill in Monmouth on June 25, 1950 and she survives.
Phil farmed with his Dad for 17 years before operating the Monmouth Airport for several years where he also owned the local Cessna Airplane franchise as well as being a Certified Flight Instructor. He later worked for the Army Corp of Engineers as a Lockmaster for 20 years.
He enjoyed building and flying airplanes, woodcarving and spending winters in Arizona.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa of Monmouth; his children, Phil (Nancy) Kuhnkey of Spokane, WA, Mike Kuhnkey of Huntsville, AL and Nancy (Charles) Knight of Goldthwaite, TX; 5 grandchildren, Brandon (Theresa) Kuhnkey of Nome, AK, Eric (Stacey) Kuhnkey of Huntsville, AL, Kristin (Mick) Wilson of Huntsville, AL, Cody (Stephanie) Cossman of Gainesville, TX, and Alex Cossman of Stephenville, TX; 7 great grandchildren, Jordon Kuhnkey, Colton Kuhnkey, Camryn Kuhnkey, Blake Kuhnkey, Pyper Wilson, Coby Wilson and Linley Cossman. Also surviving are 3 step grandchildren; Kelly (Shane) Schweda, Krista Fay, 2 step great grandchildren; Cheyenne (Trevor Boatright) Fay, Cherokee Fay, and step great great grandson, Tripp Alan Boatright, all of Texas .
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Kasandra Kuhnkey, and sister, Louise Johnson.
Memorial services with Military Honors will be 2:30 pm, Sunday, October 14, 2018 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Cremation has been accorded. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:30 on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Monmouth American Legion or the Monmouth Airport.
