Ernest E. Johnson, 79 of Monmouth, IL died at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at the Roseville Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Roseville.

Ernie was born May 8, 1937 in Ottumwa, IA the son of Lawrence and Myrtle (Collins) Johnson. Ernie graduated from Ottumwa High school in 1955. He also was a graduate of the National School of Meat Cutters in Toledo, OH. Ernie was employed as a Meat Manager for the Benner Tea Company in Monmouth from 1956 to 1970. He was the Meat Manager at Hi-Lo Foods in Abingdon from 1970 to 1974. He then was a meat cutter at Giant Foods in Galesburg from 1974 until 1998 at which time he retired, after 42 years of meat cutting.

Ernie married Sandra Jean Knapp on May 13, 1959 in Burlington, IA and she survives. They are the parents of three children, Julie Ann (Thomas) Lerczak of Havana, IL, Douglas E. Johnson of Louisville, KY and David (Terri) Johnson of Monmouth. IL; two granddaughters, Katherine Elizabeth Barr and Megan Elizabeth Johnson; one great granddaughter, Jaycie Nichol Cunningham; one sister, Linda (Bob) Kula of Cedar Rapids, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Martin Johnson; oldest sister, Marilyn Hegland and younger sister, Ruth Ann Grizel.

Ernie enjoyed his family, his home and his neighbors. He also enjoyed gardening, genealogy, keeping in touch with his many cousins, Civil War and Native American history, and traveling when he was able.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2016 at McGuire and Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. A private family committal service will take place at the Biggsville Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Roseville Rehabilitation and Care Center or Hospice Compassus.
