Elsie M. Meeker

Elsie M. Meeker, 91, of Galesburg, formerly of Keithsburg, IL, passed away at 3:25 p.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the Care Center of Abingdon in Abingdon, Illinois.

She was born on August 20, 1922 in Keithsburg, IL, and is the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Grey) Gluba. She was raised and educated in Keithsburg.

Elsie married Lytle Huston in 1938 in Keithsburg. She later married Guy Meeker in Aledo, IL in 1964. He preceded her in death in 1966.

Elsie worked at the Thatcher Glass in Muscatine, IA for 15 years. She also worked as a bartender at the Press Tap in Keithsburg for several years. During World War II she worked as a welder and welded boat bottoms in Portland, OR.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Keithsburg, and the Keithsburg Boat Club. Elsie enjoyed playing pitch and bingo. She was an avid reader and enjoyed reading history and biography books.

Elsie is survived by her son Richard (Mary) Huston of West Burlington, IA., daughter Candy Woods of Galesburg, IL, five grandchildren; Brian Huston of IA., Bradley Huston of Iowa, Todd Doyle of South Korea, Tammy Poland of Abingdon, IL, and Paula Blackman of Little York, IL. Also surviving are twelve great grandchildren and one brother Jake (Caroline) Gluba of Aledo, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Marty Huston, two sisters and seven brothers.

Per Elsie's request, her body was donated to science. A gathering of family and friends will be Saturday, January 25, 2014 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Keithsburg, IL. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory in Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements, 309-734-6008.
