Dorothy L (VanWinkle) Hammitt

Dorothy Louise Hammitt, 70, of Monmouth IL passed away on April 20, 2018 in her home surrounded by family.

She was born June 13, 1947 in Pocahontas, AR to Lawrence Grover and Verla Donetta (Reynolds) VanWinkle. Dorothy was raised and educated in Geneseo and Moline, IL.

On August 6, 1966 Dorothy married Dennis W. Hammitt in Moline, IL. He preceded her in death on April 18, 2008.

She worked at Monmouth Nursing Home in housekeeping for over twenty years before retiring. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching Dr. Phil and reading books. Most important, she liked spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Dennis D. Hammitt of Monmouth, IL; Donna Hammitt of Galesburg, IL; David Hammitt of Kirkwood, IL; and Derick Hammitt of Monmouth, IL; 5 sisters, Katherine Burnett, NC; Helen Frazor, TX; Debbie Palmer of Moline, IL; Joyce (Jim) Burnett and Mary Anderson of Monmouth, IL; and 1 brother, Lawrence (Brenda) VanWinkle, of East Moline, IL . Numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

A Celebration of Life will be at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 27, 2018 at the Monmouth American Legion, 1110 N 11th St, Monmouth, IL.  Cremation rites have been accorded.  Memorials may be given to the Dorothy L. Hammitt Memorial Fund.  McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements.
