Donald Mills, 88, of Monmouth died at 7:05 A.M. Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Monmouth Nursing Home, Monmouth.
Don was born Oct. 15, 1926 in Berwick, IL the son of Harry and Hilma (Anderson) Mills. He was raised and educated in Monmouth graduating from Monmouth High School in 1944. He later attended Monmouth College.
Don served with the United States Army during World War II; he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal and Expert Rifle Badge.
He first married Barbara Adkinson in September of 1948. Don later married Marian Thompson Armstrong in Galesburg on March 23, 1967 and she survives.
Don lived his entire life in Warren County, Illinois working in agriculture. Don was a veteran of the US Army, a lifetime member of the American Angus Association, a master carpenter and builder, making beautiful Nutcrackers and duck decoys. He also restored Kentucky Long Rifles. He loved to travel and was an avid follower of University of Illinois athletics. Don could fix almost anything and he loved to laugh and tell stories with his many friends and large family.
He was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth and was a former member of the Monmouth Rotary Club.
Survivors include his wife; 1 son, Doug Mills of Rosewell, GA; 2 daughters, Denise (Steve) Mumma of Green Valley, AZ and Marianne Mills of Douglasville, GA; 1 stepson, Donald (Sandra) Armstrong of Downers Grove, IL; 1 stepdaughter, Lynn (John) Biggs of Monmouth; 5 grandchildren, Ian Mills, Emily Mumma, Nikki Mumma, Jason Haynes and Rachel Haynes; sister, Betty (Raymond) Bruyn of Monmouth and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Harry Mills, Robert Mills and Jim Mills; sister, Mildred Ryner.
Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Burial with Military Honors take place at Warren County Memorial Park. Friends may call Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at the funeral home where his family will be present from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to the Monmouth Nursing Home.
