Dolores Lena (Davis) Johnson, 88, of Monmouth, IL passed away at 11:40 am Sunday, December 17, 2017 at Legacy Estates, Monmouth.
She was born January 26, 1929 in Monmouth, IL the daughter of Charles Lee and Greta Pearl (Daugherty) Davis. She was raised and educated and lived most of her life Warren County and Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School in 1948.
Dolores married Roger H. Johnson at the Coldbrook Christian Church on June 11, 1950 and he died February 7, 2000.
She was a homemaker. She also worked at the National Bank in Monmouth for 5 years during the 1950’s. She later worked 11 years at the Warren County United Way office before retiring in 1986.
Dolores was a member of the First Lutheran Church where she served on the Council and several other church committees. She was an Auxiliary Member of the OSF Holy Family Medical Center, serving as Treasury for 4 years and serving as a hospital volunteer for several years. She was a member of the Monmouth American Legion Auxiliary, Warren County Republican Women where she served as treasurer and was awarded the Republican Women of the Year in 2004. She was a member of the Jamieson Center Board of Director, Bishop Hill Heritage Association and the Warren County Historical Society.
Dolores loved baseball, especially when Roger played catcher in high school or when her Cubbies were on. She enjoyed music of all kinds, danced and sang from when she was young, enjoyed many years in the church choir, and even played boogie-woogie piano by ear. She was an accomplished tole painter on many items that Roger made in his wood shop. She was always an eager traveler and loved to go to new places or performances of all kinds. She acted in the Monmouth Sesquicentennial pageant, playing the role of an early settler. In the early 1980's she developed a passion for quilting, and last year she completed the final one of her quilts personalized for every child and grandchild, mostly doing everyone's quilting by hand. She also had tremendous sewing skills, frequently made gifts of individually designed aprons, table runners, purses, or clothing; and together with her many sewing pals, she also made hundreds of items like blankets for church charities, and soft toys for children. At her frequent gatherings, she baked lots of goodies for family, her sewing pals, and other friends. And she loved her Wednesday & Saturday night Mollie B. Polka Party on RFD TV!!
Survivors include her daughter, Linda Kristina (Todd) Palumbo of Kirksville, MO; son, Jim (Kim) Johnson of Monmouth, IL; grandchildren, Tracie (Shelby) Johnson of Gurnee, IL, Lena Johnson of Monmouth, IL, Mia Palumbo, Nils Palumbo, Emma Palumbo and Elsa Palumbo all of Kirksville, MO; Step- granddaughter, Stephanie (Brian) Rains-Wiesbrook; great grandchildren, Keirstyn Johnson and Tucker Smith both of Monmouth and Nakoa DeLaTorre, Amaia DeLaTorre and Mirah DeLaTorre; brothers, Leroy Davis of Oquawka, IL and Gene (Lorraine) Davis of Palm Harbor, FL; sister, Sandra (Curt) Shimmin of Monmouth, IL; nieces and nephews, Jonathan (Heather) Shimmin of Monmouth, Matt (Freddy) Shimmin of Davenport, IA, Kathy (Josh) Brauhn of Ottawa, IL, Debbie (Bill) Hruby of Oquawka, IL, Tim (Mindy) Davis of Manson, IA, Bill (Jackie) Davis, Sr. of Breman, IN and Laura (Don) Sutherland of Hopkinton, MA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Barbara Jean Davis.
A Celebration of Life will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 23, 2017 at the First Lutheran Church of Monmouth. Entombment will be in Warren County Memorial Park, Monmouth. Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Memorials may be given to the First Lutheran Church of Monmouth or the Jamieson Community Center.
