David R. Smith

David R. Smith, 75, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 10, 2018 at home after a long battle with leukemia.

He was born on January 29, 1943 to Clete and Gertrude (Tierney) Smith in Galesburg.  David attended ICS Elementary School and graduated from Warren High School in 1961.  On March 29, 1967, he married Pearl M. Yung in Galesburg.  He served six and one half years in the US Army Reserves.

David lived and farmed in the Monmouth area his entire life.  He consistently strived to protect and improve the land through many conservation projects.  David was skilled in working with wood and created many craft and furniture projects for his family and friends.  People and children were naturally and easily drawn to his warm and humorous personality.  In 2016, a car enthusiast, David participated in the Hot Rod Power Tour, the largest car cruise in the United States.  At another time he attended the Barrett Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale, AZ.

David is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pearl, a sister, Irene Johnson of Winfield, IA; a brother Earl (Phillis) Smith of Kirkwood; a brother-in-law, Frank (Mary) Yung of North Henderson, and a sister-in-law, Bernice (Greg) Errion of Collierville, TN; twenty-one nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Greiner; an infant brother, Alan Clete Smith; and two nephews, Phil Greiner and Rick Johnson.

As per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.  A gathering of family and friends will be 5:30-7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Monmouth American Legion, 1110 North 11th St, Monmouth.  Memorials can be made to an agricultural scholarship at United High School, C/O McGuire & Davies Funeral Home, PO Box 444, Monmouth, IL 61462.
