Cleo Eugene "Gene" Peters

Cleo Eugene "Gene". Peters, 77, of Monmouth died at 6:10 p.m. Monday, August 3, 2015 at his home.

He was born March 29, 1938 in Muscatine, IA. the son of Myron Sunday and Estella Lorraine (Munson) Peters. He was raised and educated in Eliza Township, Mercer County, IL.

Cleo served with the United State Air force for a time.

Cleo married Grace Peters. He later married Dawn M Gerst in Wooster, OH on Jan. 17, 1990.

He worked as a cook at Sharon's Bar & Grill (currently PaPa's) in Monmouth for several years. He enjoyed gardening, especially rhubarb, reading and a good intellectual debate. He was a very generous person who on many occasions opened his home to friends and family.

Survivors include his 3 sons, Eric Myron (Virginia) Peters of Monmouth, Rob Eugene (Brianna Strack) Blackman of Monmouth, Levi Gerst of Hazel Green, Alabama; grandchildren, Benjamin Eugene Peters, Curtis W. Blackman, Maxwell R. Blackman, Cassidy Walls and Christopher Gerst; sisters, Michelle "Mickey" Peters and Pat Peters both of Florida; brother, Ray "Louie" Peters of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Grace Peters.

Cremation has been accorded. A memorial service and burial in Eliza Cemetery will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Cleo Peters Memorial Fund and left at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth.
