Brigid Stokes

Brigid Stokes, 95, of Monmouth, IL died at 5:25 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at the Monmouth Nursing Home, Monmouth, IL.

Brigid was born November 19, 1920, in Derrydruel, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland. She was one of ten brothers and sisters. Her parents, Charles and Anne (O'Donnell) Solan were strict Catholic, the religion they clung to during times of happiness and sorrow. Brigid was raised on the family farm near the Atlantic Ocean in Ireland. She and her sister Rose enrolled in nursing school in Chelmsford, England during World War II. While working as an RN, she met her future husband, David, a soldier in the Army Air Corp.

After World War II, Brigid came to the United States and married David Stokes and settled on the family farm in Oquawka, IL. He passed away March 26, 1998.

Brigid was a homemaker and farmer's wife for many years. In later years she returned to her nursing profession, and worked at The Colonial Home and Applegate Nursing Home in Monmouth. She loved to collect china tea pots, knit, crochet and bake. She was a member of St. Andrews Church in Oquawka, and Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth.

Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn "Mori" Ruzicka of Ponce Inlet, Fl; son, Gregory (Lynn) Stokes of Oquawka; grandchildren, Christine (Alan) Gangl, Stephen Ruzicka, Bailey Stokes and Ian Stokes; great grandchildren; Cole and Lucian, brother, Patrick "Paddy" Solan of Ireland; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Brendan Stokes; 5 sisters & 3 brothers.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth. Cremation will take place following the Mass with a private family interment in Oquawka Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 9, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth with a Rosary Service beginning at 4:30 p.m. Memorials can be made to the Monmouth Knights of Columbus.
